Proteases are a class of enzymes in living organisms that effectively break down proteins. Proteases break down proteins by breaking the peptide bonds that hold amino acids together into polypeptide chains. Small molecule compounds that inhibit protease activity are called protease inhibitors. Inhibitors of many viral proteases are very effective antiviral agents.
